From 1940 to 1945, the number of women in the workforce increased by 50 percent. The image of Rosie the Riveter became, and continues to be, a cultural icon symbolizing women's "can do" attitude and their successful performance in jobs traditionally held by men. These women were trailblazers for their daughters who came of age in the sixties.
