Architect hands keys to Henderson Hall to CCM President Sherman H. Masten

 

  • Oct. 1, 1963 -  Morris County Freeholders appointed an 8-member study committee to explore the need for a college. Heading the pioneer group was James Henderson – (First CCM building is named Henderson Hall.)  The group also included Dr. Sherman H. Masten, who became CCM’s first college president.
  • March 9, 1966 – Morris County Freeholder name an 8-member CCM Board of Trustees.
  • July 20, 1966 Dr. Sherman H. Masten officially named as President of CCM.
  • March 15, 1967 ­-  218 acre site south of Rt. 10 named as location.
  • June 22, 1967 – Trustees unveil building plans.
  • Sept. 29 - Groundbreaking for the Henderson Hall building.
  • Feb. 27, 1968 - First seven students accepted for Admission.
  • June 18, 1968 - Construction contracts signed for Academic Science Buildings.
  • Aug. 21, 1968 - Staff moved from temporary headquarters in East Hanover to Henderson Hall on Randolph campus.
  • Sept. 24, 1968 -  Classes begin with  592 full-time and 703 part-time students
  • Oct. 20, 1968  - First public open house.
  • First graduating class in June 20, 1970 – 221 students received degrees.
  • Fall 1970 – Five additional buildings completed: the Masten Library, Sheffield Hall, the Health & Physical Education Building, the Student Community Center and a service building.
  • Fall 1973 – Cohen and DeMare Halls completed.
  • Fall 1982 – CCM reaches its highest enrollment of 12,012 students.
  • 1986  - Dr. Sherman Masten retires as CCM’s first college president. Dr. Edward J. Yaw becomes CCM’s second president.
  • 1989 – Emeriti Hall added to the academic complex.
  • 1992 – CCM opens an extension campus at Headquarters Plaza in Morristown.
  • 1993 – 20,000 square foot addition added to the Masten Library.
  • 1994 – Sheffield, Cohen and DeMare Halls are joined with two additions, totaling 20,417 square feet.
  • Fall 1997 – Aquatic Facility added to the Health and Physical Education Building.
  • Fall 2005 Renovation of Student Community Center completed.
  • Spring 2008 – Henderson Hall renovation completed.

  • In Sept. 1968, the college offered 13 majors, 40 different courses and 20 different sections. By 1972-73, CCM offered 15 different majors, 272 different courses and 1,510 sections.
  • Tuition in 1968 was $13 per credit hour for in-county residents.

  • The typical starting salary for faculty was $11,000 per year.
