History

Beginnings:

Support for students with learning disabilities began at CCM in 1988.  The HORIZONS program was formally established in 1989 as part of a three-year NJ state Challenge Grant.  Since that time, CCM has maintained its strong support for this program.

Erasing Labels:

From the beginning, the program was planned to maximally integrate these services into the fabric of the college community. To that end, HORIZONS is part of the Center for Academic Support & Enrichment (CASE) which is open to all students at CCM. The use of faculty tutors furthers the integration. Confidentiality is an important related issue. Student involvement with HORIZONS does NOT appear on the student's records.

Empowering Students as Learners:

A "strategies" approach has always been the primary avenue used to help students develop the skills needed to succeed as independent, active, responsible learners.   Areas of focus include:  textbook reading strategies, memory strategies, test-taking strategies, note-taking strategies, writing strategies, and self-advocacy skills.  Appropriate accommodations (promoting student independence and responsibility to the degree possible) are determined on an individual basis to "level the playing field" in the area(s) of disability for each student.

Commitment to Maintaining Our Reputation:

We are very proud of the excellent reputation we established from the outset; we continually strive to improve and update our services.  At the present time, our reputation has attracted students from 10 other counties around the state.  At times, we draw from other states as well.
