Preparing for College

  1. Understanding how high school and college differ is an important first step: high school vs. college comparison (click here for information).

  2. Additional steps to take before starting college:
      Students should --
    1. Understand their strengths and weaknesses and their impact on learning

    2. Develop effective self-advocacy skills

    3. Be motivated -- have goals meaningful to them

    4. Be able to use effective learning strategies

    5. Use assistive technology appropriate for them, including

      • tape-recording classes
      • books on tape
      • word processor (with spelling checker)
      • screen-reading software
      • voice recognition software
      • self-paced tutorial software

    6. Be proficient in basic math and algebra

    7. Be able to write and proofread (by themselves) a 5-paragraph essay (with accommodations)

    8. Have as much experience with mainstream and college preparatory courses as possible. It is a big jump (too big a jump) from Resource Room to a college classroom.

    9. Avoid exemptions that deny the student needed experience (research papers, HSPT, etc.)
