Our mission is to connect with our community and to connect students with the world. To that end, the Languages and ESL Department offers language instruction that stresses communication and culture. In fact, our expert instructors are second language learners themselves, and have been prepared to use their experience and training to assist you in your learning process!
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program
, under Professor James Hart’s guidance, prepares students whose native language is not English for the challenges of education in the United States at the college level.
The Languages program
focuses on proficiency acquisition and offers twelve (12) fully-transferable languages that you can use to fulfill your graduation requirements: American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Dr. Marcia Picallo coordinates advanced Spanish courses for our Spanish Education Program or for those willing to hone their skills in Spanish. The program currently does not offer a major in any language, but the Psychology and Education Department offers a major in Spanish Education.
The Languages and ESL Department also houses the International Studies program
and CCM’s Study Abroad Program
, both coordinated by Professor James Hart.
Outside of the Classroom
The Languages and ESL computer lab, located in DH155, has open walk-in hours for students and offers many software programs and audio CDs to learn, practice and review most languages taught at CCM and English skills as well. Students in the ESL program can also benefit from using the Writing Center located in DH156.
The need for global awareness gave birth to the department’s Languages Coffee Hour that annually features one or more languages and brings speakers that share their experience learning and using languages in their careers and abroad. We also offer other venues and literature lectures for everyone to enjoy.
The Languages and ESL program invites the community to learn a language at CCM as a way to enhance a career and to gain knowledge of the surrounding world. Welcome!
