Jason Esposito loves CCM! He truly believes he would not be where he is today without CCM’s excellent professors who made him believe in himself and guided him along his path to success. A quiet underachiever in high school, Jason became an inspired college student. He graduated with honors from CCM in 1998, earning an Associate Degree in Humanities/Social Science while developing a new motivation to make a difference in the world. That inspiration has directed his life ever since. Receiving degrees with honors from East Stroudsburg University (B.A. Psychology) and George Washington University School of Medicine (M.S. Health Science), Jason’s star was continuing to rise.

Jason began living out his dream of helping others in his position as a Fitness Analyst with Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation where he worked with patients with disabilities such as paralysis, traumatic brain injury, and stroke. He was promoted to Clinical Research Associate and was inducted into Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society. He continued his quest when, in 2001, he was hired by Quintiles, Inc. to study the clinical trial process of investigational drugs for rheumatoid arthritis and gastroenterology.

The next year, his impressive research was rewarded when Schering Plough offered him a Clinical Research Associate position. The very next fall, his ascent to success took him to his current position as a Clinical Research Scientist with pharmaceutical giant, Novartis. He is responsible for managing, organizing, and overseeing clinical trials in the Clinical Development/Medical Affairs division.

CCM has harnessed Jason’s enthusiasm for his alma mater by appointing him to the Alumni Advisory Board in 2004 and, most recently, featuring him as a billboard celebrity in the “I Started Right” marketing campaign. He is extremely proud of this honor and says its proof that you can achieve what you want to in life. His wife, Elizabeth, also a CCM graduate, is amazed at what her husband has achieved in the last six years and how he is truly making a difference.

Brendon Smith has given the ultimate gift to society. Only a few short months ago, Brendon donated one of his kidneys to his long-time friend, Cedric Hill. They met at CCM in a theater class in the early 90’s, continued their education together at Rowan University, and remained close friends over the years. When Cedric began experiencing kidney failure four years ago, Brendon commented that if his friend did not receive a new kidney in three years, he would provide one. Late last year, true to his word, he informed his sick friend that he would help him get better. The kidney transplant was performed in February 2005 at St. Barnabas Medical Center. Brendon is doing well, and his CCM buddy, Cedric, has made a remarkable recovery.

Brendon has come a long way to get to this point. After obtaining his Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from CCM in 1993, he earned a Bachelor Degree in Theatre from Rowan University. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and spent four years traversing the world, experiencing war-torn Bosnia. In 1999, he joined the reserves and was called to active duty to support Operation Enduring Freedom. Promoted to the rank of Sergeant, he participated in anti-smuggling operations in Kosovo. In 2003, Brendon’s reserve status was re-activated to join the War in Iraq. He left the Marine Corps in 2004 to focus more on his family – wife Karen, baby daughter Angelina, and step-son Anthony.

For Cottie Benson ’75, giving to others is one of the most rewarding aspects of her life.  She discovered early on that she had an amazing aptitude in financial planning.  Her expertise resulted in the creation of the Benson Kresge Foundation, which she oversees as President.  The foundation’s charitable interests include education, and social and human services issues. Kenneth Spilatro ’82 stays connected to the place where he “started right” in many different ways. In 1990, he was a celebrity in one of the first “I Started Right” billboard campaigns. Fulfilling a life-long dream of opening a ski shop in Morris County, Spilatro has been the President/Owner of Pelican Sport Center in Morris Plains since 1980. While his store’s location has always been close to the college (he started in a converted two-bedroom house on Route 10 East), Pelican recently underwent a major expansion to over 70,000 square feet and moved even closer to CCM - down the street on Route 10 West. Spilatro has employed students from CCM and can always be counted on to provide a generous auction gift at the annual Scholarship Gala.

Spilatro earned an Associate Degree in Business at CCM in 1982. As a student, he took 13 credits a semester while working 40 hours a week at his store. It was tough, but he acknowledged that the business classes really helped him in his career. An advertising class influenced him to be creative in advertising and to realize its importance in promoting a business. He continues to follow that philosophy. He went on to Fairleigh Dickinson University where he also studied business. Spilatro’s shining business achievement is reflected in annual sales of over $10 million.

For any season, a walk though Pelican Sport Center is a feast for the eyes. From skiing and snowboarding attire and equipment, to everything you need for your pool, spa or patio, or just games for your family recreation, this local business has it all.  The success of Pelican Sport Center is a glowing tribute to the hard work and dedication of one of CCM’s bright stars!
