Hispanic Heritage Month began on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries -Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16 and Chile on September 18. It continues through October 15.
Wednesday, October 1 - CCM's Student Newspaper - The Youngtown Edition - is published. Thursday, October 2 - Sexual Assault Prevention Workshop: "No Means No". Guest speaker Denise Lang, a therapist from the Morris County Sexual Assault Center, will be giving a presentation about sexual assault and how to keep yourself safe! Time: 1 p.m. Location: SCC Davidson Room. Sponsored by the Student Government Association of CCM and the Office of Campus Life. Friday, October 3 - " The Soft Parade: Tribute to the Doors Concert". The Soft Parade is revered worldwide as the premiere Doors tribute show. They recreate, with stunning accuracy, the primal, poetic atmosphere of a vintage Doors concert. The Soft Parade is internationally recognized as one of the most authentic, realistic tribute bands working today. From the vintage musical instruments and sound equipment right down to stage, clothing, and hairstyles - experiencing The Soft Parade is as close to seeing the Doors as anyone can possibly get. Time: 7:30 p.m. Location: Student Center Auditorium. Tickets are $15, available at the Information Window at the Office of Campus Life at 973-328-5076. Wednesday, October 8 - "CLU: Campus Life Update" is published and distributed on campus. Wednesday, October 8 - "The 1960s: Days of Rage, Days of Hope". Raymond Frey will discuss Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Beatles, civil rights, Martin Luther King, Vietnam, Woodstock and much more. Leaving the tranquil ‘50s behind, the ‘60s challenged government policies and social norms. It was a time of rage, but also a time of hope and one of the most interesting periods in American history. Time: 10 a.m. Location: Student Center Davidson Room. Admission is free. Thursday, October 9 - "The 2008 Electoral Agenda: Election Symposium Part 3." A four-part panel discussion series dealing with the 2008 election. Location: SCC Dragonetti Auditorium. Time: 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Co-sponsored by the Office of Campus Life, the Department of History, Political Science & Criminal Justice, and the Department of English & Philosophy, and the Office of Special Events. Friday, October 10 - NJ Tri-College Leadership Day at the Lord Stirling Outdoor Education Center: "Do YOU have what it takes?" A unique leadership experience (rain or shine) open to ALL members of student clubs / organizations at CCM, Sussex County Community College and Raritan Valley Community College. Program includes: a challenging high ropes course designed to develop team building and problem solving skills, a continental breakfast, lunch. Leave CCM at 9 a.m. and return at approximately 4 p.m. Sign-up at the Campus Life Information Window, Student Center Lobby, by October 3. This program is FREE. For more information, call Campus Life at 973-328-5225. Sunday, October 12 - Annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk-a-thon. The event will be held on the CCM campus. The CCM Ambassadors Club is the host organization. Check-in is at the CCM Gym at 9:00 am and the walk begins at 10:00 a.m. The walk is contained on the campus roadways and the route measures just under 3 miles. Monday, October 13 - Columbus Day - CCM Open. Tuesday, October 14 - SAPB Music Series: Live Music in the Student Center. Enjoy some coffee, snacks and music, featuring the acoustic sounds of Justin Thompson. Time: 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Location: SCC Lounge. Free. Sponsored by the CCM Student Activities Programming Board. Tuesday, October 14 - Table Tennis Tournament. Double elimination format. Free: come play or just watch. Sign up at the SCC Information Window. Winners are eligible to participate in the ACUI Regional Tournament at NJIT in February 2009. Time: 2 p.m. (warm-ups); 2:30 p.m. (play begins). Location: SCC Game Room and Davidson Room. Wednesday, October 22 - CCM's Jazz Ensemble Performance. Time: 4:00 p.m. Location: Student Center Cafeteria. Thursday, October 23 - CCM Respiratory Club Information Table: October 19-25 is Respiratory Care Week. Did you know that you breathe over 15,000 times per day? Want to know what you can do to increase your lung health? Ask the Respiratory Club. Location: Outside of 'B' Cafeteria (the Quiznos one). Thursday, October 23 - CCM Broadway Show Bus Trip to "The Little Mermaid" at the Lunt-Fontaine Theatre. Synopsis: After rescuing a handsome young prince, Ariel, a young mermaid, makes a Faustian bargain with an unscrupulous sea witch that allows Ariel to be human, but at a terrible cost. Bus Leaves CCM at 4:30 p.m. for 8:00 p.m. show. Tickets: $60 CCM Students; $65 Guest. Includes dress circle seats and roundtrip chartered bus transportation. Tuesday, October 28 - PTK Honors Satellite Seminar Series: "The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences." Topic: Pathways Out of Poverty through Green Collar Jobs. Presenter: Dr. Raquel Pinderhughes, Professor of Urban Studies at San Francisco State University. All are invited to attend this second of four PTK satellite seminars. Wednesday, October 29 - "Hired Hands" Jazz Ensemble Performance. Time: 4:00 p.m. Location: Student Center Cafeteria. Wednesday, October 29, Thursday, October 30 & Friday, October 31 - CCM Performing Arts Production: "Hair." The musical that created history by bringing rock n' roll to the theatrical stage, Hair defines the '60's generation by examining a group of young adults struggling for generational and personal identity, dealing with the Vietnam War, drugs, and teenage pregnancy. Dynamic score includes "Let the Sunshine In," "Aquarius," and "Good Morning, Starshine." Location: SCC Auditorium. Time: 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $15; $10 for CCM students with valid ID card and those ages 18 and under. On sale at the Campus Life Information Window. Thursday, October 30 - CCM Health Service's Annual Blood Drive will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Location: LRC Reading Room. The need for blood has not diminished. If you are in general good health, weigh at least 110 lbs. and have not donated blood in the last 56 days or more, please consider offering this life-saving gift. Thursday, October 30 - The EOF Student Alliance's Sixth Annual UNICEF Fundraiser. UNICEF provides for the emergency relief and survival of poor children around the world- Disaster relief, basic health needs, food, clean water, shelter, education and immunizations, to name a few of things. EOF/CCM has set a goal to surpass all previous UNICEF drives and raise $1000. All proceeds will be matched by the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF. Location: Alcove outside of B Cafeteria.
