Instructions for Graduates

A ceremony befitting the dignity of the occasion has been planned for you. Since there is no rehearsal, please read the following instructions carefully:


1) Arrival Time: 6 p.m.

The ceremony begins promptly at 7 p.m. but you must be in your assembly room (see below) already dressed in your cap and gown no later than 6 p.m. (allow time for traffic) to await instructions from your room usher. Please leave valuables and your gown box at home as there is no place to store them. If you have reason to believe the college might be closed for an emergency, listen to the same radio station you used for closings during the semester, call 973-328-5580, or check the website at  www.ccm.edu.

2) Assembly Rooms:
Assignment to assembly rooms is alphabetical by last name within college divisions according to your major (click here for your appropriate division and degree). Help in identifying your room will be available in C-232 before the procession begins.  When in the assembly room you will receive a diploma card to file out.

3) Honor Society and Potential Honors & Merit Designees

  • Honor Society stoles (PTK & ABG) were handed out at induction ceremonies.  If you did not attend, please contact the Office of Campus Life at 973-328-5225, to pick up your stole.  If you have lost yours, contact the Office of Campus Life at 973-328-5225,  to purchase another.
  • Potential Honors and Merit Designees for May graduates will be notified by official letter.  January 2008 and August 2007 graduates should have already received their letters. August 2008 candidates will receive their letters in early September. Honors and merit regalia (collar or braid) will be distributed in room C-232 from 6 – 6:45 p.m. on graduation night. The collar or braid must be returned to the Office of Records and Registration (in the Student Community Center lobby) following the ceremony and before receiving your diploma.

4) NJ STARS regalia (braid) will be distributed in room C-232 from 6 – 6:45 p.m. on graduation night. The braid is yours to keep.

5) Processional:
The procession will move from the Academic Science buildings along the outside walk and enter the HPE building through the front doors. Candidates will remain standing during the processional until the platform party is seated. Seating is as follows:

6) Recognition of Candidates:
Honors and merit candidates will be recognized first. President Yaw will be asked to confer the certificates and degrees. Certificate candidates will be recognized second. All candidates, including honor and merit candidates, will stand as a group when called upon. After Dr. Yaw confers the degrees, the group will be seated. Tassels will remain on the right side throughout the ceremony.

7) Presentation of Individual Graduates:
President Yaw will ask an usher to escort graduates, one division at a time, to the stairs at the right of the platform. At the bottom of the stairs you will hand your diploma card (which you received in the assembly room) to the reader. When your name is read, cross the platform, receive a diploma cover from the President, continue across the platform, down the stairs on the far side, and return to your seat.

  • A professional photographer will take two photos.  The first photo will be of each graduate shaking hands with President Yaw.  The second photo will be taken as you exit the platform, holding your diploma.  In June, you will receive a letter from the photographer and a proof of your photos with an order form.   • Please ask your guests and relatives not to approach the platform during the ceremony to take photographs. A roped section, to the left of the stage (see diagram above*), will be designated for guests wishing to take photographs as you cross the stage. Please ask your guests to be considerate of others and to wait until you are approaching the stairs before entering the designated photography area, and to exit immediately to allow other guests the same opportunity.

8) Recessional:

Everyone stands at the end of the ceremony. The Grand Marshal will lead the recessional. Graduates, following ushers, will exit via the center aisle. Please ask your guests to remain in place until graduates have exited the gymnasium and not to block the aisles to take photographs.

9) Diplomas:

Diplomas will be distributed in the SCC lobby during the one-hour period following commencement. The Alumni Office will be selling diploma frames at that time as a fundraiser.

10) Reception:

There will be a reception for graduates and their guests in the SCC, Davidson Room, immediately following the commencement ceremony. The president, trustees, faculty and administrators will be on-hand to offer congratulations.
