Tricks of the Trade -- TEXTBOOK READING
Survey
You would not play a game without knowing the rules; you would not run a race without warming up. Do NOT try to read a chapter in a textbook without first surveying it properly. It is the only way to learn the rules and warm up for the race. You will find it much easier to pick out what is important; you can also read more quickly when you have surveyed.
- Get the idea of what the chapter will be about by reading the title, headings, and subheadings taking note of the relationships among them.
- Next, read the summary! (This is where the author has picked out the main points for you!)
- Now go back and read the introduction quickly.
- Look at and read the captions of pictures, graphs, etc.
- Read the definitions of key terms (if the book has them either
at the end of the chapter or in the margins).
- Write any terms you do not understand on a 3 x 5 card and use it when you get to the READ section of this strategy.
