State-of-the-art assistive technology is available for the use of Horizons
students. It serves the dual functions of (1) reasonable accommodation,
and (2) learning tool. The Center for Academic Support and Enrichment
(CASE) is equipped with 14 student PC computer stations, which may be
reserved by appointment.
CASE's technological aids include hardware and software to increase the
student's ability to meet college course demands. The following illustrate
some of the applications:
- Scanners, using Kurzweil "scan-and-read" software assist
students with reading difficulties, allowing students to hear, as well
as see, text.
- Other software (TextHelp and Inspiration) help students with writing
disabilities plan, organize, edit and enhance written production using
both auditory and visual channels of learning.
- Tutorial software is available to strengthen knowledge and skills
in specific areas.
- AlphaSmart lightweight word processors and Libretto hand-held computers
allow students who have difficulty writing legible notes and essays
to type them in class.
- Voice-recognition software is available for highly-motivated students
who have extreme difficulty expressing themselves in writing, but whose
oral expression is strong.
- Tape recorders with remote-access, label-clip microphones allow students
with memory and note-taking difficulties to capture fleeting lecture
information.
- Special four-track tape recorders allow students to access books
on tape available through Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic.
CCM supports regular upgrades to its computer equipment to assure the
latest advantages will be available to students at the college.
