Veterans Assistance Programs

Chapter 30 - New GI Bill

Veterans are eligible who entered active duty service on or after July 1, 1985 and whose pay was reduced by $100 dollars each month for the first twelve months of active duty service.  Veterans must have served at least two years of active duty.   Application is made on VA form 22 - 1990.

    If a veteran has previously used benefits under this program, VA form 22-1995 is completed instead of the application.

Chapter 31 - Vocational Rehabilitation

Veterans are eligible who served in the armed forces during World War II or thereafter if all of the following conditions are met:

    1.  Veteran has received a service-connected disability while on active service entitling him/her to compensation (at least 10% as rated by the VA).

    2.  Veteran has been discharged or released under other than dishonorable conditions.

   3.  The Veterans Administration determines a need for vocational rehabilitation to overcome the handicap.

Eligibility is for twelve (12) years following discharge.  Certain circumstances warrant as extension as determined by the VA.  Application is made on VA Form 28-1900

Chapter 32 - Veap - Veterans Educational Assistance Program

Veterans are eligible who have served on active duty on or after January 1 1977 and were released under conditions other than dishonorable, or completed their first obligated tour of service.  They must have satisfactorily contributed to the program.   Application is made on VA form 22-1990.

If a veteran has previously used benefits under this program, VA form 22-1995 is completed instead of the application.

Chapter 35 -- Dependents

Generally eligible are survivors of deceased veterans, or permanently and totally (100%) disabled veterans, as a result of a service-connected disability or an individual on active duty who has been listed for a total of more than 90 days as missing in action.  Other categories may apply.

Eligibility for children under chapter 35 generally starts at age 18 for college training.  The child's 26th birthday is the ending date for training   unless there are extreme situations as determined by the VA.  If the VA determines these situations valid, eligibility may be extended to age 31.

Eligibility for spouses under chapter 35 generally is for a period of ten years from the date of the veteran's death, the date on which he/she became totally and permanently disabled or from the 90t day that a veteran was listed as being MIA or POW.

Application for dependent sons or daughters is made on form 22-5490; for widow or widower, form 22-5490w.

If a dependent has previously used benefits under this program, VA from 22-5495 should be used for children, and VA form 22-5495w should be used for widow or widower.

Chapter 1606 - National Guard and Selected Reserves

This is an educational assistance program for those who are currently serving in the National Guard or Selected Reserves.  Students must have enlisted ,reenlist, or extended an enlistment for a period of at least six (6) years after June 30, 1995, have at least 180 days of service and completed the initial period of active duty or training.   Application is made on VA form 22-1990.

If a veteran has previously used benefits under this program, VA form 22-1995 is completed instead of the application.
