Free Informational Session at CCM Offers an Insider’s View – Posted 4/13/16
County College of Morris (CCM) and the organization New Jersey Women in Law Enforcement will be holding an informational session for those interested in learning about career opportunities for females in the field of criminal justice.
The session, which is free and open to the public, takes place Tuesday, April 26, from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Davidson Rooms in the Student Community Center on CCM’s Randolph campus, 214 Center Grove Road. Space is limited and reservations are suggested by contacting William Solomons, professor of criminal justice, at wsolomons@ccm.edu or 973-328-5648.
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes will serve as the keynote speaker. In 2009, Valdes became the first Latina county prosecutor in New Jersey, the first woman prosecutor in Passaic County and the first lead prosecutor of Dominican ancestry in the United States.
Valdes has dedicated her professional career to government service. She served as municipal prosecutor in the City of Newark, as a deputy attorney general in the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office and as an assistant United States attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark. Prior to joining the United States Attorney’s Office, she served as an assistant counsel to Governor Christine Todd Whitman and Acting Governor Donald T. DiFrancesco.
She is a past president of the County Prosecutors Association of New Jersey and served as the 25th president of the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey and as a trustee of the New Jersey State Bar Association. She received her undergraduate degree in sociology from Seton Hall University, her law degree from Rutgers Law School-Newark and her LL.M. in trial advocacy from Temple University.
Included among her awards and honors, Hispanic Business Magazine named Valdes one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics in the United States. In 2011, Honorable Leonel Fernandez, president of the Dominican Republic, named her one of the 100 Most Influential Dominicans Living Abroad.
The informational session also will include a panel discussion consisting of women from a wide variety of law enforcement agencies, from the local level to federal level.
Along with New Jersey Women in Law Enforcement, the session is being sponsored by the Department of Criminal Justice, the Criminal Justice Club and Campus Life at CCM.
