Event Emphasizes the Value of Art Education for All Children – Posted 2/10/17

Artwork from schools throughout Morris County will be on display in the Sherman H. Masten Learning Resource Center at County College of Morris (CCM) from February 20 through March 11, as part of Youth Art Month (YAM). The artwork will be on display on the first floor of the Learning Resource Center on CCM’s Randolph campus, 214 Center Grove Road.

“We are so excited to showcase the talent of students throughout Morris County, as well as the schools’ art programs,” said Maura Boucher, chair of the Morris County Youth Art Month program. “Our 2017 show will be our largest one to date with 30 public and private schools represented and 300 students participating. Our show primarily features two-dimensional work, but does showcase some three-dimensional work, as well.”

A reception is scheduled for Saturday, March 11, from 10 a.m. to noon, featuring a musical ensemble from the Randolph schools. Gift bags for the event have been generously donated by major art supply companies, including Sax Arts & Crafts, Dick Blick Art Materials and Nasco Arts & Crafts.

Youth Art Month is nationally sponsored by The Council for Art Education and was started in 1961. The event celebrates visual arts for grades K – 12, emphasizes the value of art education for all children, encourages support for quality school art programs and promotes art material safety. Youth Art Month also provides a forum for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences that are not possible in other curriculum subjects.

The Morris County chapter of YAM stated that it’s “so pleased to be able to have CCM host this year’s art show. The facilities are absolutely spectacular.” The show is located near the college’s Art and Design Gallery.

CCM offers an Associate in Fine Arts degree that is designed to transfer to four-year colleges as the first two years of a liberal arts education. For more information on the Art and Design programs at CCM, visit the Department of Art and Design.
