Kai RobertsKai Roberts Informs and Increases Awareness Through Hip-Hop

In recognition of National Suicide Prevention and Awareness month, the County College of Morris (CCM) Counseling and Student Success, The Legacy Project and the Office of Special Events presents Kai Roberts, an inspirational speaker on mental health awareness. This is the first in a series of speakers the Legacy Project is presenting for the 2018-19 academic year.

Roberts will perform his high-energy presentation, Active Mic: Mental Health Through Music, on Thursday, September 20, at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Community Center’s Davidson Rooms, 214 Center Grove Road, Randolph. The event is free and open to the public.

Active Mic: Mental Health Through Music tells the story of Roberts’ battle with anxiety and panic disorder through an interactive presentation and hip-hop music.

The Pittsburgh native was a full-time student at Carnegie Mellon University when he began to experience extreme anxiety and panic. In the fall of 2012, he decided to take a leave of absence from college and focus on improving his mental health. Roberts began to use music as his medication, translating his thoughts and frustrations into poetry. His music helped guide him through his recovery and eventually his return to stability.

Those songs resulted in his first album, Carnegie Café, a collection of hip-hop songs that are meant to connect with students who are also struggling with mental health issues. Roberts hopes that his music inspires others to find outlets for achieving their own mental health balance and provides a beacon of hope.
