Student Works of Art on Display March 21 through April 17

Visitors to the Mayo Performing Arts Center (MPAC) in Morristown this spring will be treated to a special exhibition of the creative work of County College of Morris (CCM) Visual Arts students.

The showcase of approximately 35 pieces will feature works in various mediums, including charcoal, ink, pastel, colored pencil, mixed media and digital. The exhibit, curated by CCM Professor Todd Doney, Art & Design, will represent the artistic expressions of students enrolled in his Portfolio and Presentation class, as well as some of his former students.

The exhibition in MPAC’s The Art Upstairs Galley takes place March 21 – April 17. A free public reception will be held on Wednesday, March 29, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The students plan to display pieces created as part of CCM’s Visual Arts program, Doney said. “With help from their classmates, I’ll select the students’ best work to be included in the show.”

The gallery provides public exposure for the student artists, Doney added. “And it allows CCM to proudly display the work created by our talented students to an audience that might not otherwise have a chance to see it,” he said.

This year’s exhibition marks the ninth time MPAC has hosted the show since Charles Miller, MPAC Program Consultant and Coordinator of the Art Upstairs Gallery, first invited CCM Visual Art Students to display their work in 2014.

This year, a total of $250 in gift certificates for Dick Blick Art Supplies will be presented to deserving artists. That includes $75 for Best in Show, two $50 certificates for Merit Awards, and three $25 certificates for Honorable Mentions.

In addition, Mike Dziomba, President of the New Jersey Art Association, will donate a $100 prize to the Best in Show recipient.

All student participants will also receive two tickets to their choice of any MPAC show, courtesy of Miller.

Students will also have the opportunity to sell their work at the exhibit, according to Doney. “It’s not unusual for one or two pieces to sell,” he said. “So, this exhibit gives the students another ‘real-life’ experience to learn from during their time at CCM.”

A free public reception will be held at The Art Upstairs Gallery at the Mayo Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, March 29, from 5 to 7 p.m.

MPAC is located at 100 South St. in Morristown. The gallery is open for patrons two hours before all performances and by appointment. Call 973-539-0345, ext. 6583.
