Career Certificate
All manufacturing industries, research and development organizations, and design divisions of major corporations use drafters in the preparation of various stages of formal drawings. Typically, companies that hire engineers, architects or designers have a need for people skilled in drafting.
The Computer-Aided Drafting Technology Program at CCM prepares a person for an entry-level position as a Junior Drafter, Drafter Trainee, or Drafter using computer aided drafting (CAD). The supportive technical course work in manufacturing, materials, science, mathematics and writing will aid students in continuing to advance their careers and assist in strengthening the background of those desiring to continue their education.
County College of Morris has state-of-the-art computers running the latest version of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software that provides the student with needed hands-on experience. A fully functional prototyping lab rounds out the student’s experience in the manufacturing process, taking idea from concept to reality.
Many student in this program continue and earn their Associates in Applied Science (AAS) in the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program at County College of Morris.
Computer-Aided Drafting Technology salaries vary depending on a person’s drafting specialty. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, mechanical drafters earned a median annual salary of $58,270 in 2020, while architectural and civil drafters had a median pay of $57,500. PayScale.com reports that most CAD operators in 2021 earned between $40k and $77k.
Career options include:
- Architectural Drafters
- Computer-Aided Designer/Drafter/Engineer
- Electrical Drafters
- Mechanical Drafters
CAD drafters can have various specialties as well. For instance, drafters may work in fields such as:
- Aeronautics
- Architecture
- Civil engineering
- Electronics
- Mechanics
- Process Pipelines
Demand for drafting jobs is expected to continue to grow through the next decade. Since CAD is dependent upon the latest software, it is important for operators to stay current with developing technologies and techniques. Familiarity with the latest CAD systems increases your ability to get and retain jobs. Experience with the software and drafting skills is most important, although an associate degree or professional certification is quickly becoming a requirement.
