Welcome to the Languages Program at County College of Morris! We offer instruction that emphasizes both proficiency and culture in the following languages: American Sign Language, Arabic, French, Italian, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish. Students who wish to major in a language and are interested in transferring to a four-year college language program should major in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Humanities/Social Science, or International Studies. These majors at CCM allow for higher levels of world language study, or the study of multiple languages. Each language is offered in four basic levels:
- Elementary I (no knowledge of language expected or required)
- Elementary II
- Intermediate I
- Intermediate II
In addition to these four levels, the Languages Program may offer the following advanced courses depending on student interest and enrollment:
- French Conversation and Literature I & II
- German Conversation and Literature I & II
- Italian Conversation and Literature I & II
- Advanced Spanish Composition
- Advanced Spanish Conversation
- Survey of Latin American Literature: Pre-Columbian to the Present
- Spanish Literature
We currently administer a placement test for Spanish. Students may take the Spanish Placement Test at the Testing Center without departmental permission. Students looking for placement in a higher level than Elementary I for languages other than Spanish are evaluated by the Languages and ESL Chairperson or Assistant Chairperson. In general, students who have taken three or more years of a foreign language in high school within the past two years will be advised to take the Elementary II level or higher. The Languages and ESL Department grants credit for prior learning. The number of credits granted will depend on the type of test or course taken and the language it was taken in. Students who would like credit for previous language study should consult the department chairperson
