BOOK DISCUSSION
Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera
Tuesday, March 21 at 5:30Â p.m. in CCM’s Art Gallery
Join Professor John Soltes for a discussion of the bestselling book Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera. From the book jacket: “The birth of a daughter — Kahu — breaks the lineage of a Maori tribe. Rejected by her grandfather, Kahu develops the ability to communicate with whales, echoing those of the ancient Whale Rider after whom she was named. This magical and mythical novel tells of the conflict between tradition and heritage, from the perspective of Kahu’s grandfather, and Kahu’s destiny to secure the tribe’s future.”
The book is accessible for readers 10 and up, and there’s an Oscar-nominated film that can be enjoyed as well (in case reading the book is not possible). Refreshments: 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Discussion 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
