Proud to Honor the Vibrant Latino Culture with a Multitude of Events
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, County College of Morris (CCM) is honoring the vibrant Latino culture with a variety of engaging and educational events for participation by the community.
The first event is a dynamic exhibition from New Jersey photographer and artist Joe Guerriero, entitled “Still Waiting For Normal: The Enduring Spirit of Cuba and Its People.” Presented by the CCM Arts & Humanities Department, the exhibit combines aspects from several of Guerriero’s works. This includes the effects of the Cuban Trade Embargo, the aspects of Santeria and culture in Cuba and a screening of the Guerriero-produced film, “Curtain of Water/Telón de Agua.” A reception, free and open to the public, will take place on Thursday, September 12, from 6 – 8 p.m., in the CCM Gallery in the Sherman H. Masten Learning Resource Center. Wine and light refreshments to be served. Guerriero’s work will be on display through Thursday, October 31. For more information, visit www.ccm.edu/ccm-gallery/
Hispanic Heritage Month continues at CCM with the Longo Planetarium’s stellar show “Big Astronomy,” which may be viewed with audio in Spanish on Thursday, September 26 at 5:30 p.m. This 45-minute engaging journey brings the audience on Earth to the extreme sites where astronomy happens in the most extreme environments. The show is recommended for adults and children ages 8+. Tickets are now sold out.
The Legacy Project at CCM welcomes Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Miriam Pawel as she discusses her book, “The Crusades of Cesar Chavez,” which chronicles Chavez’s rise from migrant worker to national icon. This event is being held on Thursday, October 10 at 12:30 p.m. via Zoom and requires advance registration. Email legacy@ccm.edu to receive the link.
The celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month culminates with the energetic “¡AQUÍ ESTAMOS! – WE ARE HERE!” performance on Saturday, October 12 at 7 p.m. in Dragonetti Auditorium. An entertaining evening of theater, live music, poetry, dance, and more, to celebrate local Latino talent while supporting CCM’s College Promise Programs which provide college readiness to middle and high school students. Sponsored by the college’s Office of Educational Opportunity and Cultural Engagement, tickets are $20 for the community, $10 for CCM students, staff and faculty, and will be available online at www.bookstore.ccm.edu/.
