Matt Rifino landed an internship at Avatar Studios (The Power Station) that became four years on staff. Working alongside legendary engineers including Al Schmitt, Jack Joseph Puig, Michael Brauer, Neil Dorfsman, Jason Corsaro, and Rich Costey provided a real-world education that continues to shape his approach. Rifino later transitioned to freelance work and, through a chance opportunity, began mixing live broadcasts for the NBC Today Show, eventually becoming the show’s Broadcast Music Mixer. Since then, he has mixed over 4,000 performances by nearly 1,500 artists—including Adele, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Fleetwood Mac, Sting, Taylor Swift, and many others—often under intense time pressure and in front of millions of viewers. After years focused on broadcast, Rifino returned to studio work, building his own mix room and reconnecting with record production. His background in both studio and live broadcast, combined with a love for improvisational music, led him into the jam band world, where he continues to work with artists such as Spafford and Eggy. He currently mixes from Barbershop Studios in Lake Hopatcong, NJ.
