Explore the Colors of the Cosmos at the Longo Planetarium

Three New Shows this Fall Invite Audiences of All Ages to Discover the Wonders of Space
The Longo Planetarium at County College of Morris (CCM) is dazzling audiences this fall with three new shows running now through December 13. From explorations of supernovas and live tours of the autumn night sky to colorful cosmic journeys designed especially for children, the community is invited to step under the giant 33-foot diameter dome for an unforgettable adventure.
“Cosmic Colors,” a new show for children, takes them on a wonderous journey across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Learn why the sky is blue, why Mars is red and how black holes emit x-rays. Audiences will tour the interior of a leaf, voyage through the human eye and explore the invisible universe in this adventure under a rainbow of cosmic light! This 45-minute program is recommended for children, ages 8 and up, as well as adults. Showings take place on select Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 2 p.m.
“Messengers of Time and Space” provides an in-depth look at how the twin Gemini Observatories are working together with the new Rubin Observatory and other astronomical instruments to map the universe and monitor the night sky for fleeting astronomical events such as supernovas, pulsating stars, comets and asteroids. This 45-minute program also includes a guided tour of the sky and planets. It is being shown on select Fridays at 9 p.m. and Saturdays at 3:30 p.m. and is recommended for ages 10 and up.
Rounding out the season is “Starlit Nights,” a live-guided tour of the night sky provided by CCM Planetarium Astronomer Kevin Conod. Using Digistar 7, the world’s most advanced planetarium system, audiences will travel through the stars, constellations and clusters, plus explore Saturn, which is easily visible this fall. This 45-minute program is recommended for ages 8 and up and is shown on select Saturdays at 5 p.m.
