Shortly after graduating college, Dee McAree, professor of English, was advised by a friend that she should get certified to teach. Her friend offered that since McAree had majored in English that teaching would be her best option to turn her degree into a career. McAree, however, turned to writing first.

“At the time, I was about 21 years old, and I didn’t feel that I knew enough about the world, or even myself, to stand up in front of a classroom and impart ‘knowledge,’” says McAree.

After receiving her B.A. in English with a minor in Paralegal Studies, McAree began as an editorial assistant at New York Law Publishing. From there, she launched into a career writing for various professional publications.

“Working in a professional setting among journalists and creative writers helped me to find ways to connect my talents to the real world,” says McAree. Her love of writing grew stronger as she increasingly recognized the power of words to give voice to even the smallest corners of society and to both persuade and enlighten others.

After 15 years in the field of journalism, McAree transitioned to a freelance career to make more time for her then preschool-aged children. She had always kept the idea of teaching in the back of her mind, and once she began working on the faculty at County College of Morris (CCM) she knew it was the perfect fit.

“I love teaching here at CCM. I’m inspired by the energy of my colleagues, my students and my surroundings. Every day in our classrooms, we are building bridges to connect our students to the futures they strive for,” McAree says.

After earning her B.A. from Montclair State University, McAree went on to receive her M.A. from City College of New York in English with a Creative Writing concentration. She spent a year overseas teaching English for students in grades 5 – 12 in Seoul, South Korea. Her published works include contributions to The National Law Journal, The New York Law Journal and Government Engineering: The Journal for Public Infrastructure.
