Special Projects:
Salinas has developed a low-cost option for non-major students to satisfy their 4-credit general education science requirement. The course, Concepts in Biology (BIO 132), is offered online through Virtual Campus. Cost was limited by the implementation of an Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook and the elimination of a required laboratory kit. Students complete hands-on laboratories, at home, utilizing common household items.
In addition, Salinas has developed and implemented a virtual microscope into several biology courses in collaboration with Professors Caitlin Burns (Biology/Chemistry) and Eric Guadara (formerly of Information Technologies). The virtual microscope project was funded by the Advisory Council of the Open Textbook Collaborative (OTC), a New Jersey higher education project funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
