He received his B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology from Lewis & Clark College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Stony Brook University, specializing in the areas of social movements, organizations, and culture. Previously, he taught at St. Lawrence University, Stony Brook University, and Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador.
He is passionate about teaching and at the core of his teaching philosophy is an emphasis on active learning, based on the idea that students will retain more of what they learn when they have some ownership over their learning.
His goals in the classroom include facilitating students’ engagement, comfort, and openness to learning from each other. His teaching is also informed by his published research on various topics including the Occupy Wall Street movement, dumpster divers in New York City, and mobilizations surrounding the construction of an Islamic center in Lower Manhattan.
