Brian Oleksak will Show How to Make Stunning Designs While Conserving Water – Posted 4/13/16
Those looking for inspiration for their yards while still conserving water will be able to find it at an upcoming presentation by County College of Morris (CCM) Professor Brian Oleksak at the Morristown and Morris Township Library.
Oleksak, chair of the Landscape and Horticultural Technology Department at CCM, will give a talk called “Xeriscape Design Principles: Creative Landscape Designs for a Changing Climate” on Wednesday, April 20, at 7 p.m. in the library’s lower-level meeting room. The library is located at 1 Miller Road in Morristown.
The talk, presented on behalf of the North Jersey History and Genealogy Center, will feature how plants have adapted to water conservation and how gardeners can use their attributes to bring form, texture and color into thoughtfully designed gardens.
“Xeriscaping was first promoted in drier regions of the western United States to preserve water resources while still promoting beautiful landscapes,” Oleksak said. “This presentation will help those who are looking to enhance their landscaping, but are concerned about the environment and excess water use.”
The talk will include a discussion of rock and hardscape features, as well as gravel gardens, rain gardens and vegetative roofs.
In addition to chairing the department at CCM, Oleksak also teaches Plant Science, Plant Identification, Introduction to Horticulture, and Horticultural Soils.
The program is supported by a grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission and from funding from the Friends of the Morristown and Morris Township Library. It is in conjunction with the Landscape Architecture Exhibit on display in the Kirby Gallery through June. Refreshments will be served.
