Scholarship Recognizes Athletic and Academic Success – Posted 2/21/17
Ranell Bell, of Rockaway, a first-year player at County College of Morris (CCM) averaging over 20 points per game on the men’s basketball team, recently was awarded the Jack Martin Scholarship.
“Ranell is a quality student-athlete who embodies all of the qualities one would expect for such an honor,” said Jack Sullivan, director of Athletics. “While his on-the-court work ethic and performance make him a worthy candidate, it is his hard work in the classroom and service to our country that makes him a hands-down choice.”
After graduating from Morris Hills High School, Bell served three years in the U.S. Army. Upon leaving the Army, he attended Misericordia College but then decided to return home and enrolled at CCM. During his first semester, he made the Garden State Athletic Conference All Academic Team. To qualify for that recognition, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The $1,000 scholarship was presented to Bell on Saturday, February 18, by Martin during a break in the Morris County high school boys’ basketball tournament at CCM. Martin served as the first director of Athletics at CCM from 1968 – 2002. He also was the head Men’s Basketball coach. He amassed 569 victories as head coach, won numerous region championships and advanced to several national tournaments. He was inducted into the National Association of Two Year College Athletic Administrators’ Hall of Fame.
