A Weeklong Exploration into Cybersecurity
Incoming high school freshmen and sophomores for the 2022-23 Academic Year from Dover, Morristown and Parsippany are invited to take part in a free exploration into the world of cybersecurity during the GenCyber camp to be held at County College of Morris (CCM) this summer.
An Open House about the camp, which is being offered at no cost, will be held on Tuesday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m. in Emeriti Hall, Room 217, on CCM’s campus, 214 Center Grove Road, Randolph. To RSVP, email ccmgencyber@ccm.edu.
The GenCyber Camp takes place June 27 – July 1, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Participants, limited to 40 students, will learn coding, take part in hands-on activities, develop a knowledge of cyberspace and explore careers in cybersecurity. Lunch and snacks will be provided. Transportation also will be provided at no cost from Morristown High School and Dover High School. All students take home a Raspberry Pi kit upon completing the camp. The camp is supported by a $52,080 grant from the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation awarded to CCM.
“Students do not need experience in computer science or cybersecurity to take part in the camp,” says Professor Dawn Rywalt from the Department of Information Technologies. “What is important are interest and enthusiasm and the desire to learn about careers in the exciting field of cybersecurity.”
CCM was the first community college in New Jersey to be designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security. To gain that designation, CCM needed to demonstrate that its cybersecurity curriculum is aligned with national standards, that the college contributes to providing a pipeline of professionals who can assist with protecting against cyber attacks and is an information security resource for the community. As part of those efforts, the college for the second time is offering the GenCyber summer camp it first offered in 2018.
