About Our Department

Our mission is to connect with our community and to connect students with the world. To that end, the Languages and ESL Department offers language instruction that stresses communication and culture. In fact, our expert instructors are second language learners themselves, and have been prepared to use their experience and training to assist you in your learning process!

Languages

CCM offers instruction that emphasizes both proficiency and culture in the following languages: American Sign Language, Arabic, French, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. Chinese, German, Latin and Russian are offered based on enrollment trends.

Dr. Marcia Picallo coordinates advanced Spanish courses for our Spanish Education Program or for those wanting to hone their skills in Spanish.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program prepares students whose native language is not English for academic coursework in the United States at the college level.

The program currently does not offer a language major, but students who want to study world languages can major in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Humanities/Social Science, International Studies, or Spanish Education.

The Languages and ESL Department also houses the International Studies program and CCM’s Study Abroad Program.

CCM Gallery

CCM’s Gallery is a non-profit exhibition space serving established and emerging artists. The gallery space provides opportunities for the Departments of Arts & Humanities and Design & Media Studies, CCM faculty and staff, and the Morris County community to be directly involved in an exchange of visual art while cultivating an environment that nurtures creativity, intellectual growth and freedom of expression.

Outside of the Classroom

Our computer lab, located in DH155, has open walk-in hours for students and offers the opportunity to practice and review language skills outside of the classroom. Students in the ESL program can also benefit from using the Writing Center located in DH156.

The need for global awareness led to the creation of the department’s Languages Discovery Session that annually features one or more languages and brings speakers that share their experience learning and using languages in their careers and abroad. We also offer other venues and literature lectures for everyone to enjoy.

Finally, the Languages and ESL Department is proud to call itself home to a chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma, the foreign language honor society. This student group provides students a community space to connect with others who have a similar interest in world languages and language learning and to hone their leadership skills.

The Languages and ESL program invites the community to learn a language at CCM as a way to enhance a career and gain knowledge of the surrounding world. Welcome!

What is the College Student Success Course?

College Student Success (CSS 011 – N2 Credits) is designed to assist first year students in their adjustment and success with the college experience. In addition to the topics above, students will learn about academic expectations and developing skills to meet them, campus resources, library use, making career choices, taking online courses, and working with an academic advisor. This course will also introduce the development of leadership skills. This class will clarify the specific dynamics of the interpersonal relationships within the campus community, emphasizing the expectations placed upon students by professors, and aiding students as they create an understanding of the role they play in their academic journey.

Who’s required to take it?

Students participating in specific programs, such as the EOF Program, may be required to take it. If you are not sure about your major and if you are required to take this course, talk to your advisor during New Student Registration.

NOTE: This course is open to all students. If you feel this course can help you enhance your college experience and get you ahead, we encourage you to register.

Study Abroad Program

The mission of the Study Abroad Program is to provide students with access to a global education. CCM offers students study abroad opportunities in twenty-four (24) countries through the College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS): Argentina, Australia, Austria, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, England, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Peru, Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and Vietnam.

The basic requirements for study abroad are at least 15 credits of completed course work and a minimum GPA of 2.5. However, some programs have more competitive requirements. Study abroad is not restricted to certain majors. Students from almost any major find that they can study abroad and still earn credit towards graduation.

Students are required to meet with the study abroad advisor well in advance of their planned semester abroad. This allows time for the student and advisor to collaborate on completing the application process, choosing classes, arranging proper transfer of credit, and applying for any required visas.
