What You Will Learn
As the community’s college we are dedicated to forging meaningful connections that expand your horizons. With this in mind, the Languages and ESL Department is here to provide you with language instruction that places a strong emphasis on both effective communication and rich cultural understanding. In fact, our expert instructors are second language learners themselves and use their experience and training to assist you in your learning process.
At CCM you may choose from seven to become proficient and culturally educated in — American Sign Language, Arabic, French, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Chinese, German and Latin are offered based on enrollment trends.
This route of study is also ideal if you have the intention to transfer to a four-year college or university to earn a bachelor’s degree. The programs in Liberal Arts and Sciences, International Studies and Spanish Education at CCM provide the best foundation for higher levels of studies.
Curriculum
The languages offered have four basic levels:
- Elementary I (no knowledge of language expected or required)
- Elementary II
- Intermediate I
- Intermediate II
In addition to these four levels, you may pursue the following advanced courses depending on your interest and student enrollment trends:
- French Conversation and Literature I & II
- German Conversation and Literature I & II
- Italian Conversation and Literature I & II
- Advanced Spanish Composition
- Advanced Spanish Conversation
- Spanish Literature
- Survey of Latin American Literature: Pre-Columbian to the Present
The Department of Languages and ESL offers three Associate in Art degree programs:
- English for Speakers of Other Languages
- International Studies
- Spanish Education Specialization

Why Study Languages at CCM?
Get an advanced start on your degree!
- In general, students who have taken three or more years of a world language in high school within the past two years will be advised to take the Elementary II level or higher.
- Native speakers of one of the languages offered may only enroll in advanced courses of that language, or they must choose a different language to study. Permission to take advanced classes must be obtained from the department chairperson.
Gain credit for prior learning!
- Students may receive academic credit for the AP exam in Chinese, French, German, Italian or Spanish.
- Students who have taken CLEP tests through a recognized testing center can apply to obtain credits towards a degree at CCM.
- The number of credits granted depends upon the type of test or course taken and the language it was taken in.
Fulfill a Language Requirement!
- Students may also fulfill their language requirement through a departmental examination in the languages we offer if they demonstrate appropriate and specific criteria. Please see department chairperson for an evaluation of eligibility.
