What You Will Learn
Learning about the past helps us to see changes in social norms and values in cultures and communities. If you want to help spark a person’s greater sense of self and others, examining behaviors and processes, consider enrolling in the Teacher Education program at CCM.
Designed for students wanting to major in sociology and to also take some courses in education, this program guides you to, upon graduation, transfer to a four-year college or university leading to certification for teaching.
CCM has 10 different Teacher Education specializations to start you on your career as a teacher in grades K-12. You will graduate with an Associate of Arts degree from one of the best community colleges, ready to take the next steps and be a passionate educator.
Curriculum
A 45-credit general education foundation includes courses such as English Composition, Speech Fundamentals, General Psychology and Principles of Sociology, plus sequences in History, the Humanities and Math-Science-Technology, and an additional six credit in Sociology.
A 9-credit Teacher Education core prepares your aptitude in your craft.
First-hand experience and active participation in diverse and inclusive classroom settings through 20 hours of classroom observation rounds out your program at CCM.

Graduating from CCM with an associate degree is the first step to becoming a teacher. Transferring to a four-year college or university and successfully completing a bachelor’s degree program is the next step.

Principles of Sociology
A comprehensive introduction to the discipline of sociology, examining the basic concepts, e.g., role, status, social structure, research methods, culture, socialization, stratification, norms, values, groups, associations, institutions, community, deviance and society, as well as exploring its foundations and history, and techniques of seeing and understanding the world from a sociological perspective.
Contemporary Social Issues – America As a Diverse Society
Investigates issues that challenge citizens in post-modern America. Scientific analysis of topics such as global, political, and economic trends, inequality, group conflicts, pluralism, urbanism, alienation and bureaucracy, family disorganization, mass communications, addictive behaviors and social movements. Special attention is given to field research which develops student competence in understanding contemporary social issues.
Behavior Observation in Education
Approximately 30 hours of field classroom observation and weekly seminars in which fellow aspiring teachers learn to apply the teaching methods they learn.
