About Our Department
“Words – so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them.” – Nathaniel Hawthorne
Hawthorne’s words speak to the power of analysis and expression, the two spheres of study housed within the Department of English and Communication. Our courses offer the chance for students to develop agency in analyzing the words of others and in sharpening their ability to harness the power of their own words in both writing and speaking.
Our graduates who have studied English have then pursued bachelor’s degrees and beyond, using this foundation to equip them as lawyers, teachers, activists, consultants, writers, managers, and innovators in many fields. Those who have pursued communications have sought professions in marketing, social media, and public relations.
Laura Driver
Chairperson, English and Communication Department
The Associate of Arts Degree in English Education prepares you for transition to a Bachelor’s Degree and teacher certification. Working with an advisor in English, as well as the coordinator of teacher education, equips you with the skills necessary for the challenges and opportunities you will encounter as an English teacher. Courses emphasize literature and composition and include English, American, and world literature.
