What You Will Learn
The Languages Program at CCM offers instruction that emphasizes both proficiency and culture in 6 (six) languages:
- American Sign Language
- Arabic, French
- Italian
- Japanese
- Spanish
Students who want to study these languages and are interested in transferring to a four-year program can major in the Liberal Arts and Sciences: Humanities/Social Science, Spanish Education or International Studies which provide a foundation for higher levels of language study.
Curriculum
Each language is offered in four basic levels:
- Elementary I (no knowledge of language expected or required)
- Elementary II
- Intermediate I
- Intermediate II
In addition to these four levels, the Languages Program may offer the following advanced courses depending on student interest and enrollment:
- French Conversation and Literature I & II
- Italian Conversation and Literature I & II
- Advanced Spanish Composition
- Advanced Spanish Conversation
- Survey of Latin American Literature: Pre-Columbian to the Present
- Spanish Literature
Students looking for placement in a level higher than Elementary can be evaluated by the Arts and Humanities Chairperson. In general, students who have taken three or more years of a world language in high school within the past two years will be advised to take the Elementary II level or higher. The Arts and Humanities Department grants credit for prior learning. The number of credits granted will depend on the type of test or course taken and the language it was taken in. Students who would like credit for previous language study should consult with the department chairperson.

You may choose to work in international business, government or health care, serve populations from around the world, teach abroad or teach a foreign language in the U.S., work in an industry that requires usage of a foreign language and more.

Get an advanced start on your degree!
- In general, students who have taken three or more years of a world language in high school within the past two years will be advised to take the Elementary II level or higher.
- Native speakers of one of the languages offered may only enroll in advanced courses of that language, or they must choose a different language to study. Permission to take advanced classes must be obtained from the department chairperson.
Gain credit for prior learning!
- Students may receive academic credit for the AP exam in Chinese, French, German, Italian or Spanish.
- Students who have taken CLEP tests through a recognized testing center can apply to obtain credits towards a degree at CCM.
- The number of credits granted depends upon the type of test or course taken and the language it was taken in.
Fulfill a Language Requirement!
- Students may also fulfill their language requirement through a departmental examination in the languages we offer if they demonstrate appropriate and specific criteria. Please see department chairperson for an evaluation of eligibility.
